During the final and most devastating Byzantine-Sasanian War, the Sasanian general Shahrbaraz invaded and occupied Byzantine territories. The Sasanians captured major cities including Damascus, Antioch, Tarsus, and Jerusalem, temporarily severing Constantinople's land link to the rest of the eastern Mediterranean.
The Byzantine Emperor Heraclius launched a successful counter-offensive, reclaiming the teritory rand forcing the Sasanian witdrawal by 628 AD—leaving both empires exhausted right before the rapid Muslim conquests of the 630s.
